I'm gonna hit WalMart on my way home for some stuff, so I'll see if they have a hoot call... they have all their calls on clearance since the season is over for most guys around here.

Now there are a variety of owl hoots out there and in my opinion some or WORTHLESS!!!! Primos make a hoot that is, I believe green/clear, IT SUCKS. It has a hole to put your finger in then a snout you blow in from the front, WORTHLESS, you would do better using you mouth, then using it. NOw with that said, the best hoots out there are the ones with a reed in them like a buck grunt. They are REALLY LOUD and produce gobbles pretty darn good! Mine is made out of wood and i blow on it as LOUD as i can making a owl hoot! And when you hoot put expression in it and hoot 3 times imitating a owl. Mine sounds like an owl; however it is HIGH PITCH and really gets them fired up! I got mine at academy, and i dont think wally world carrys the diaphram owl hoots. Somebody might beg to differ on this issue but IMO the clear plastic owl hoots are a waste of money!

hoot owls work as well as hawk and peafowl for locators that others don't use much

Re: Turkey Hunt starts Monday!
I've seen owl locators at Wally's, so I might have to just get one of those.
I have a mouth call and a glass pot call... dang pot call sounded like crap, so I ended up calling with my mouth pretty much... Probably should buy a box all for next year...

Agreed! I have 5 of them and that is really all i use! The mouth calls TAKE ALOT OF PRACTICE to master perfection!! Now a slate call is also one of my favorite really easy to use!! Just make sure you keep it sanded IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION! dont sand in circles sand across the call that way when you striker is on it you have some resistance due to sanding! IDK how good you are with mouth calling but IMO you would be more successful with a slat OR box call!

I'm not too bad with my mouth call, actually, but I'd rather have some variety. I'll try to re-sand my glass call and see if I can make it sound any better. Wally's also had a 3 pack of different strikers clearanced for $5, so if they still have em, I'm gonna snag em.
